The Museum

From Memorial Stone to Memorial Site

The Telemann-Museum is an initiative of the Hamburger Telemann-Gesellschaft (Hamburg Telemann Society). It is dedicated to the cultural remembrance of the composer Georg Philipp Telemann, who was one of the formative personalities of Hamburg's past musical life. The museum is a place of historical preservation of the social living environment of Telemann and his contemporaries in Hamburg through cross-generational, dynamic, and experience-oriented cultural activities following the statutes of the Hamburg Telemann Society.

Meticulous, descriptive, lively....

The basis for the work of the Telemann-Museum includes all references to the work of the composer, musician, music director, opera conductor and author during his Hamburg years from 1721 to 1767 and of his national and international influence on musical development to the present day. The tasks of the museum are understood to include documentation, information, and education through events.

The target groups of the Telemann-Museum include pupils of all types of schools, students of cultural studies, and citizens interested in music. At the same time, the museum aims to create a communication center for musicologists and professional musicians with a particular interest in the music of the Telemann era in Hamburg.
